The
Cal-Glen Soccer Club is located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada
and serves the communities of Altadore, Elbow Park, South
Calgary, Lincoln Park, Bankview, Richmond/Knob Hill, North
Glenmore, Mount Royal Garrison Woods, Rutland Park, Glenmorgan
and Lakeview.
Over thirty
years ago, the South Calgary Community Association and
North Glenmore decided to blend their programs due to
the shortage of kids. Bill Salt, Rob McNicol, Shawn Hyde
and Larry Darling were all instrumental with the founding
of the Cal-Glen Soccer Club and the Chinook Soccer Club.
These gentlemen were also the driving force behind setting
up girl's soccer for the Cal-Glen area. Bill Salt and
Shawn Hyde, now in their seventies, both coached for 22
years and have many fond memories. At that time, the age
levels were the same as hockey, Tiny-Mites, PeeWee, Bantam,
Midget and Juvenile. It is due to their efforts that the
club is involved in the casino's, which allows our children
to play soccer for lower fees as well as the opportunity
to play in school gyms.
Pat and Doug
Bowers joined the club in 1976 when their kids started
to play. The club had about the same number of teams in
1976 as in previous years, which wavered from 8 to 12
teams. The Club had a house league and a city league and
even back then the Properties and Fish Creek were large
clubs to compete with. In recognition of the Bowers' tireless
efforts, the "Bowers Cup" was introduced and
has been awarded every year to the Volunteer of the Year.
Polly Booth
joined the club in 1988 when she took over the equipment
from Pat Bowers. The Club had very little equipment at
that time so each coach received a net bag, balls, first
aide kits (in Tupperware containers, which the club still
has) corner and side flags and very few pinnies. Polly
had the reputation of having a "ringing" personality,
as she set off the alarm at North Glenmore more times
than she would care to admit. Thanks to the generosity
of the Chinooks the Club received goalie pants and better
first aid kits.
