1.
Introduction
The
Cal-Glen Soccer Club is a volunteer organization with a
mandate to develop and promote the game of soccer. Although
the club is made up of a variety of volunteers; the cornerstone
of the Club are the Coaches. They are the key component
dealing with both the development of the players and the
liaisons between the Club and the parents. The Club cannot
be successful without competent, patient, and knowledgeable
Coaches. The Club recognizes the importance of the Coaches
and this manual is to provide them with as much information
as possible to allow the Coaches to concentrate on coaching
the players.
Prior
to the beginning of a season, a meeting will be held with
the Coaching Coordinators, Registrar, Equipment Manager,
Team Managers and Coaches to discuss issues such as practice
locations, division of players into teams, equipment issues,
etc. Coaches should hold a parent questions or concerns
meeting at the beginning of every season. Please see the
Cal-Glen Soccer Club Guidelines
for more details concerning coaching or other Club related
information.
2.
Coaches Fair Play Codes
The successful Coach invests
more in the well-being and interests of the players than
in their win-loss record. Be fair with your demands on the
players' time, energy and enthusiasm. Remember that they
have other interests. Teach your players that the rules
of the game are mutual agreements, which no one should evade
or break. Avoid over-playing the talented players and insure
all players need and deserve equal coaching and playing
time. Remember that children play for fun and enjoyment
and that winning is only part of it. Never ridicule or yell
at the children for making mistakes or losing a competition.
"Remember Cal-Glen is about 'Fun First' and improving
every players' skill level."
Ensure
that equipment and facilities meet safety standards and
are appropriate to the age and ability of the players. The
scheduling and practice times should take into account the
players maturity level and age.
Develop
team and player respect for opponents, fellow players and
referees. Remember that children need a Coach they can respect.
Be generous with your praise when it is deserved, and set
a good example.
Make
a personal commitment to keep yourself informed on sound
Coaching principles and the principles of growth and development
of children.
3.
Qualifications
Most Coaches get involved when their children
are at a young age. As such, qualifications are kept to
a minimum for U6 and U8. As we move up into U10 and the
demands, knowledge of the game, skill for coaching increase.
The Club offers clinics for U6 and U8 and as member of the
CMSA all coaches are encouraged to take CMSA Clinics and
NCCP (National Coaching Certification Program) Courses which
Cal-Glen will cover the costs for its Coaches.
All
Coaches must have some form of first aid training and it
is recommended that they attend a CPR course. The Club will
reimburse the Coach for the cost of this training.
It is
recommended that U12 and up Coaches have a Coaching Certification
or have extensive experience in coaching or playing soccer.
Course information are list with the CMSA
under the technical link or under
Clinics on our web page.
4.
Assistant Coach
The Assistant Coach is an important part
of any team. The Assistant is a "must have" for
every Coach. The Assistant Coach must be willing and able
to assume the coaching responsibilities at practices or
games in the Coach's absence. Support the Coach in direction,
information and philosophy (this must be discussed and clarified
with the Coach). It is important that the Coaches work together
as a team. The Assistant Coach is expected to have input,
converse with the Coach on a regular basis and express his/her
views.
The
Cal-Glen Soccer Club hopes all Assistant Coaches will wish
to pursue becoming a head Coach. The coaching course and
first aid opportunities offered to Coaches are also available
to Assistant Coaches.
5.
Practices, Scheduling and League Play (Outdoor)
Game
and Practices
Game fields will also be used for practices. Practice
times must be coordinated through the Coaching Coordinator
to avoid conflicts. The recommended practice length is
1 hour for U6 to U10, and 1 ½ hr for U12 to U16.
The
basic practice should be set up as follows:
-
Warm
up
-
Skill
Development
-
Cardiovascular
fitness development), this can be accomplished in
competitive games
-
Some
form of game or fun competition
-
Warm
down
This
may be modified according to the age group.
Please
use the following as practice guidelines:
-
Plan
out your practice. Write it down and review it afterwards
to see what worked well and what didn't.

to ensure each player uses a ball as much as possible
during the practice.
-
Try
to keep the players moving as much as possible during
the entire practice.

-
Enlist
the assistance of parents and assistant Coaches
for the practices (the Coach can't be everywhere
at once).
-
Ensure

the game, the Coaches' expectations of the players
and the rules of Conduct for both players and Coaches.
-
Keep
the practices upbeat and fun, offer encouragement
and praise and provide constructive words of improvement.
-
Use
keywords and phrases to emphasize certain points
and ideas (i.e... first to the ball).
-
PLEASE
ensure the field is in safe condition before any
practice or game. Perform a visual inspection (with
the help pf parents and players) and remove any
dangerous objects or fill in any holes.
-
ALWAYS
bring ice and a towel to reduce swelling in case
of injury.
-
Try
to schedule practices with teams in the same age

to the home team coach. Always confirm with the opposing
Coach before making a decision but if it is a home game
it the Cal-Glen coaches decision. Inform the parents that
all games/practices are on unless they hear from the coach
or team manager. You are also responsible for canceling

to the original game or prior the rescheduled
game date (whichever game comes first).
-
If approved, teams will receive a game update email,
and the game will be changed on the web site schedule.
It is NOT approved until the web
site is changed.
For
U10 Southwest League it is not mandatory to reschedule
a game. The decision is up to you and the opposing team.

a game is started and the weather changes during the game,
it is the decision of the ref to call the game for U10

should be made available for all parents to review.
Discussion
of team positions to be filled by parents as follows:

meeting is designed to get the Coaches and parents working
together and to minimize the possibility of surprises
or misunderstandings during the season. Please make available
a letter detailing the above information for any parents
who could not attend the meeting.
9.
Players
Meeting
It
is equally important that the Coaches hold an introductory
meeting with the players prior to or as part of the first
practice. This will allow the Coaches to introduce themselves
to the players and outline their Coaching philosophy,
and to talk about the goals and objectives for the season.
It
is often helpful if the Parents Meeting & the Players
Meeting can be combined and held at the beginning or end
of the first practice.
